Few American ceramic traditions feel as instantly recognizable as Acoma Pueblo pottery. Hand built, stone polished, and painted in graphic mineral pigments, these vessels carry centuries of technique distilled into line and form. This pair of late 20th century examples captures that lineage beautifully, each piece entirely hand painted with bold black geometric patterning that wraps the rounded forms with remarkable precision.
The larger vessel, signed “R. Poncho,” features a wider opening beneath a striking arrangement of layered triangular motifs that create a sense of movement across the curved surface. Beside it, the smaller pot, signed “C. Augustine,” with its more traditional narrow seed pot lip, balances the composition with an airy lattice-like pattern rendered in black against a warm white ground. Both rest on unpainted terracotta bases that ground the forms visually and materially.
Together, they create the kind of composition designers spend years trying to achieve: two forms in perfect conversation, balancing graphic clarity, sculptural presence, and the deeply human quality of the handmade.
