There is a particular pleasure in encountering a piece of furniture made outside the production system — a studio object where every decision reflects a single maker’s considered judgment rather than the constraints of a manufacturing line. This square end table is exactly that kind of piece. The combination of cognac leather, dark espresso hardwood, raised gallery top, and exposed bolt hardware speaks to a craftsman working with real design intelligence, making choices that production furniture of the same period rarely matched.
The top is the first thing to understand. A full panel of warm cognac leather is set within a dark wood frame and contained on all four sides by a raised gallery edge — a detail that transforms what could be an ordinary surface into something precise and intentional. The leather sits flush and even within the frame, the gallery holding it with a quiet authority that makes the top read as both functional and beautiful. The material pairing — cognac tan against deep espresso — is warm, sophisticated, and entirely unforced.
The trestle base is the piece’s structural and aesthetic counterpoint. Two supports, each an architectural composition of vertical post and splayed feet, are joined by a horizontal stretcher whose connection is made with exposed bolt hardware — round bolt heads visible on either side. This is not a construction shortcut; it is a design decision. The maker chose to let the joinery be seen, to celebrate the structural logic of the piece rather than hide it behind a veneer of seamlessness. It gives the table an honest, almost workshop quality that sits in productive tension with the refinement of the leather top above.
No maker’s label is present, consistent with independent studio production. The piece works beside a sofa, at the end of a bed, as a drinks table in a study or library, or as a display surface anywhere that a piece of genuine craft presence is welcome.
