A disciplined study in line, proportion, and material contrast, this Brazilian modern armchair from the 1960s articulates a quietly confident design language rooted in architectural clarity. The composition is reduced to its essential gestures: a tall, gently reclined backrest, continuous arm supports that resolve in a fluid, forward sweep, and a compact, grounded base that anchors the form with composure. The result is a silhouette that reads as both structural and sculptural—an economy of means elevated through precision.
The frame, executed in pau marfim (Brazilian ivorywood), has been finished in a deep ebony tone with a satin-matte surface that absorbs light rather than reflects it. This treatment foregrounds the integrity of the joinery and the refinement of the profile—edges are crisp yet softened at transitions, allowing the eye to move uninterrupted across the armature. The subtle taper of the legs introduces a measured vertical lift, counterbalancing the chair’s otherwise horizontal emphasis.
Newly upholstered loose cushions in a finely textured off-white bouclé introduce a tactile counterpoint to the austerity of the frame. The fabric’s dense, micro-loop structure brings depth and warmth without visual noise, sitting in deliberate contrast to the dark wood. The back cushion is properly nested within the frame, reinforcing the chair’s intended posture—supportive, upright, and composed—rather than overly relaxed. This balance between structure and comfort reflects a broader Brazilian modernist ethos: restraint paired with material richness.
The chair’s ergonomics are resolved through proportion rather than excess. The seat is generously scaled, while the height and angle of the back provide a natural, lounge-forward recline. Arms are set at an ideal height for rest without interrupting the visual continuity of the form. It is a piece that performs equally well in a residential setting or within a more formal, design-led interior—versatile, but never generic.
Provenance: Acquired in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Frame refinished in an ebony tone; cushions newly produced in high-quality bouclé. Restoration has been executed with restraint, preserving original geometry and intent. Minor, age-appropriate wear remains at feet and discreet contact points.
This example stands as a compelling illustration of mid-century Brazilian design intelligence—where proportion, material, and restraint converge into an object that feels both grounded in its era and enduringly current.
