Add a touch of mid-century design history to your space with this beautiful, authentic vintage pair of 40/4 stacking side chairs.
Originally designed by David Rowland in 1964, the 40/4 chair is widely celebrated as one of the most significant, influential, and ingenious furniture designs of the 20th century. It is featured in permanent museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Design & Details
This matching pair features sleek, minimalist, chrome-plated steel rod sled frames that offer exceptional strength, a slight ergonomic flex, and iconic modern lines. The sculpted seats and form-fitting curved backrests are expertly upholstered in a vintage, commercial-grade tweed weave featuring a rich blend of harvest gold, ochre, and deep espresso brown threads.
Their incredibly compact architectural design allows them to stack perfectly, making them as functional as they are beautiful. They are the ultimate versatile accent pieces—ideal for a minimalist dining setup, a mid-century home office, or stylish, compact extra seating.

Frames: The heavy-duty chrome wire frames remain bright, reflective, and structurally sound with minimal, light surface scuffs consistent with careful residential use. Glides: Both chairs are stable and sit flat. All original floor glides are present on the base rails, though please note one chair is missing a single plastic glide piece from the rear foot rail. Upholstery: The chairs remain beautifully unaltered, retaining their original, tightly woven wool-blend tweed fabric. The textile is structurally tight to the frames with no sagging, showing only a few minor, faint surface spots from honest vintage age. Underside & Authenticity: One chair features the full, double archival setup including both the David Rowland cleaning patent label and the original Law Tag. The second chair retains the large, original 40/4 material and cleaning information label. Both pieces are guaranteed authentic mid-1970s GF Business Equipment production runs. less
