History and Design:
The Flexible Flyer brand was created by inventor Samuel Leeds Allen, who patented his iconic steerable runner design in 1889. Allen originally built these sleds at his S.L. Allen & Co. factory in Philadelphia to provide winter work for his staff during the off-season when his primary product line, Planet Jr. agricultural tools, was not in production.
The "Airline" series revolutionized the market starting in 1935 by introducing sleek "Safety Runners". This series completely revolutionized traditional winter recreation. The rear ends of these metal runners curled upward and wrapped back into the wood frame, preventing children from being impaled if they ran into another sled.
The moniker "Pursuit" indicates the precise 47-inch length of the deck, which was designed as a sleek, narrow racing model for higher speeds. Super Steering: Built with patented flexible steel cross-pieces, allowing riders to dynamically flex the front runners and accurately steer rather than travelling strictly in a straight line.
The bold eagle and arrow graphics printed on top of the wood slats place this specific model layout in the 1935–1949 era.
