The fabric on the … Read more This particular tapestry is likely from the mid 1920's - 1940's handwoven in Belgium or France. The fabric on the back was added much later. The Brass Scroll also has some age to it, but it may or may not have been the original way it was hung. These panel tapestries were traditionally hung in grand hallways, between windows, or over doorways to keep out drafts while adding an elegant decorative layer.

Woven in a wool with cotton foundation threads, the panel displays the soft, painterly handling and subtly muted palette characteristic of Aubusson-type work. Both the wool and cotton feel more like a silk than what you will find in today's reproductions.

The central medallion in this piece features a prominent oval frame formed by delicate floral garlands and acanthus leaf scrolls. Floral bouquets contain two main focal arrangements showcasing realistic pink roses, blooming peonies, and soft cream-colored blossoms. Its Neoclassical borders: are framed by elegant, symmetry-driven scrollwork and stylized golden-brown foliage that anchors the top and bottom sections.
