1835 Thomas Brown Hand-Colored Canid Engraving, Archivally Matted
Original antique hand-colored natural history engraving depicting a remarkable assemblage of wild canids and related species, including foxes, wolves, jackals, and other members of the dog family. The plate is identified as “Canis, Dogs” and was engraved by W. T. Tarrant after Thomas Brown, one of the leading natural history authors and illustrators of the early nineteenth century.
Issued in 1835, the engraving combines scientific interest with strong decorative appeal. The carefully hand-colored animals are arranged in a cabinet-style composition that feels both scholarly and visually engaging, making it equally suited to a natural history collection, library, study, or curated gallery wall.
Presented by AJ | Gilded in an archival 11x14 mat using acid-free materials and reversible mounting methods designed to protect the original paper. The engraving remains removable from its presentation and has not been permanently attached to the mat.
