These elegant sliding book racks were a staple of the well-appointed Victorian library or writing desk — practical, beautifully made, and increasingly rare in good condition.
The expanding mechanism slides smoothly on wooden rails allowing the rack to expand or contract to hold any number of volumes. Each upright end panel features a finely inlaid marquetry medallion in contrasting wood veneers depicting a classical urn motif — a signature of quality English cabinetmaking of the period.
The mahogany has developed a rich, warm patina consistent with age. Inlay is intact with no losses. Sliding mechanism functions as originally intended.
A wonderful object for a home library, writing desk, or study — equally at home as a display piece or in daily use holding books as it has for over 150 years.
