Audubon Black Tern
Original 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph from The Birds of America • Royal Octavo Plate 438
Original antique hand-colored lithograph featuring the Black Tern, titled beneath the image and marked No. 88 at the upper left and Pl. 438 at the upper right. The composition shows an adult Black Tern standing along the shoreline with a young bird in flight above, a spare and elegant bird study from John James Audubon’s celebrated The Birds of America Royal Octavo edition.
The lower margin credits the work as drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon and lithographed, printed, and colored by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia. This is a genuine 19th-century Audubon bird plate, not a modern reproduction.
Presented in a dark mat and black 11 x 14 inch frame with glass for a clean, moody library-style look. The darker presentation gives the small antique plate a stronger architectural presence while keeping the title, plate number, and imprint visible.
