Originally used as portable magnifying glasses, quizzing glasses were worn around the neck or attached to a chatalaine. This one has a polished glass that offers a medium magnification in a pinchbeck frame, a durable metal invented in the 18th century and used often in Georgian objects of virtu. The frame is beautifully hand carved and hand engraved with floral foliate, and connects to a handle with floral engraving that mirrors the foliate around the glass. The handle swivels, a feature that makes this piece perfect for a chain, as the swivel allows it to always lay perfectly on the chain. An engraved orb ball holds the frame and handle together, bringing a balance to the piece that is pleasing to the eye. The frame has accrued a lovely patina that highlights the engraved details.

The quizzing glass measures 3 5/16” x 1 1/2”. It weighs 16.65 grams. Unmarked. See less
