Refrigeration was not widely available in England until the 1960's or 1970's. Dairy products were purchased on an almost daily basis in small quantities to prevent spoilage. To accommodate their customers, dairies sold cream a few ounces at a time in pottery, "cream pots". Many dairies such as this one had custom pots made with their names, logos, trademarks, etc. as a marketing tool. These pots range from simple straight sided to elaborate decorated examples and are highly collectable. This one is particularly unusual in that it is in the form of a tiny cream pitcher. See less
