Fèng huáng (凤凰) is a mythological Chinese bird, the king of all birds and it has the same status as the Chinese dragon. The fèng huáng and dragon are often depicted together in decorative Chinese earthenware pieces. The fèng huáng, according to Chinese lore, is the luckiest of all creatures and when depicted with the dragon, they signify blissful relations, good fortune and enduring strength. This slender neck blue and white fengweizun-style vase is decorated with a pattern resembling the tail feathers of the fèng huáng. This pattern is found on the rim, neck and at the edge of the base. The center of the vase depicts a five-clawed dragon and a ruyi cloud pattern. In ancient China, the five-clawed dragon represented power and authority.

This beauty measures 5¼” x 4½” x 11¾” W/D/H and weighs 2 lbs. 5 oz. It is in excellent condition with minimal age-appropriate wear. The Qianlong Nian Zhi mark is on the underside and it is guesstimated that this vase was made sometime in the early to mid 20th century.

There’s just something about blue and white earthenware that makes a stylish statement and above all, seems to work with any style. For a collector of blue and white earthenware, this beauty should be a must have or the perfect gift for someone who is.
