Antique American Carved Mahogany Four-Poster King Bed, c. 1880-1910
A substantial antique four-poster bed in carved mahogany from the late Victorian / Rococo Revival period, c. 1880-1910. Hand-carved acanthus leaf capitals, barley-twist turned posts, flame finials, and ball-and-claw carved feet. The headboard rises to approximately 90" tall, making this a serious statement piece for a primary bedroom, guest suite, or formal interior.
DETAILS
• King-size four-poster bed
• Solid mahogany construction throughout
• Barley-twist turned posts with carved acanthus leaf capitals
• Flame finials at the top of each post
• Ball-and-claw carved feet
• Carved headboard, approximately 90" tall
• Bed is currently disassembled for transport
ABOUT THE PERIOD
This bed represents the late Victorian Rococo Revival aesthetic that defined American formal bedroom furniture from the 1880s through the early 1900s. The combination of barley-twist posts, carved capitals, and ball-and-claw feet draws from earlier 17th-century English and Continental traditions, reinterpreted for the American Gilded Age. Pieces of this scale and craftsmanship are increasingly rare on the secondary market — most have been broken up, refinished, or modified to fit smaller modern bedrooms.
CONDITION
Good antique condition with honest age. There is a stable vertical hairline crack on one of the turned posts (not structural — does not affect function or appearance from normal viewing distance). Minor veneer lifting in spots consistent with 120+ years of use. The mahogany retains its original surface and rich oxidized patina. Structurally sound and ready for another century of use. Sold as-is.
USE
Works beautifully in a primary bedroom, guest suite, formal interior, or as the centerpiece of a British Colonial, Victorian, dark academia, or grandmillennial-style bedroom. The scale demands a room with adequate ceiling height (recommend 9'+ ceilings) and substantial proportions — not suited to small spaces.
