Ths is a handmade pottery serving serving dish or casserole by the famous ceramist Clary Illian, known for her whimsical animal imagery and functional pottery. The cat motif, carved slip decoration and reddish clay body are very consistent with her later earthenware work. The cat face was inspired by her own pet. Her impressed mark is under the bottom rim.
Clary Illian is a highly respected American studio potter known for functional wheel-thrown pottery rooted in the Bernard Leach tradition, Her work is admired for simple, refined forms meant for everyday use. She has worked for decades in Ely, Iow and is considered an important figure in American functional ceramics.
This dish was purchased during a visit to her studio in Ely in 2010. It is perfect for a deep dish pie. The handles are thoughtfully designed for easy handling.
