Monumental studio pottery bowl by California ceramic artist Joseph Hysong, whose career bridged the California and Hawaii studio pottery movements of the mid-20th century. Educated at San Jose State and later associated with the University of Hawaii ceramics program alongside Toshiko Takaezu and Claude Horan, Hysong developed an organic sculptural vocabulary rooted in wheel-thrown form and volcanic glaze chemistry.
This substantial vessel features a dark iron-toned body with layered matte and glossy glazes flowing across the rim in deep plum, charcoal, and iridescent mineral tones. The asymmetrical drip and broad flared rim give the piece a strong architectural presence consistent with California organic modern aesthetics.
