Antique Winslow’s “Winthrop Blend” Coffee Advertising Store Bin
American, Circa 1900–1915
A wonderfully graphic and highly decorative antique American advertising store bin for Winslow’s Winthrop Blend Coffee by Winslow, Rand & Watson of Boston and Chicago. Constructed of japanned sheet metal with bold black stenciled typography over a striking mustard-yellow ground, this large mercantile coffee bin embodies the visual charm and utilitarian craftsmanship of turn-of-the-century American general store advertising.
Originally used in grocery stores, provision shops, and coffee merchants, bins such as this held bulk roasted coffee before the widespread adoption of vacuum-sealed commercial packaging. Shopkeepers would lift the slant-front lid and scoop coffee directly for customers, making these containers an essential part of the sensory and visual landscape of early American commerce. The substantial scale suggests use in a busy retail environment rather than domestic storage.
The typography and restrained stencil decoration reflect the transition from late Victorian ornament into early industrial commercial design. Particularly appealing is the untouched mustard-yellow painted surface, now beautifully aged with oxidation, scratches, and honest wear accumulated over more than a century of use. The warm coloration and bold lettering make the piece exceptionally decorative from every angle.
Today, examples survive as coveted Americana advertising objects and are increasingly incorporated into farmhouse, industrial, country-store, and eclectic interiors. Ideal for use as a blanket chest, kindling bin, dry storage container, or sculptural decorative object.
An authentic and visually compelling survivor from America’s golden age of branded mercantile advertising.
