Monumental American Brilliant Period Exhibition Cut Glass Trumpet Vase, Attributed to T.G. Hawkes, circa 1900
A monumental American Brilliant Period exhibition cut glass trumpet vase, attributed to T.G. Hawkes & Co., circa 1895–1915. Executed from an exceptionally thick lead crystal blank measuring approximately one-half inch in thickness, this impressive vase rises to a dramatic height of 24 inches, exemplifying the scale and technical virtuosity associated with the finest American cut glass of the Gilded Age.
The elegant flaring trumpet form is richly ornamented with elongated vertical panels terminating in large hobstar motifs, surrounded by finely executed fields of dense strawberry diamond cutting. This sophisticated interplay of bold geometric cutting and intricate texture creates remarkable optical brilliance, allowing the vessel to refract light from every angle. The deeply scalloped rim enhances both the sculptural silhouette and the prismatic light effects that made American Brilliant glass so celebrated in grand interiors.
Equally impressive is the substantial hobstar cut to the underside of the base, demonstrating the depth of cutting made possible by the unusually thick blank. The precision and confidence of the cutting strongly suggest the work of a premier American cutting shop, and the overall pattern structure and execution are consistent with examples attributed to T.G. Hawkes, one of the most prestigious American firms specializing in luxury cut glass at the turn of the twentieth century.
During the height of the American Brilliant Period, monumental vessels of this scale were often produced as exhibition or statement pieces intended for prominent display in elegant homes, hotel lobbies, and grand dining rooms. Under gaslight and the newly introduced electric chandeliers, deeply cut surfaces such as these produced dazzling reflections and prismatic light.
Both sculptural and luminous, this vase stands as an exceptional example of American Brilliant Period craftsmanship and decorative ambition, embodying the opulence and technical mastery that defined the era.
