Pair of Maison Jansen Style Silver Leaf Montgolfier Armchairs, France
A refined pair of Maison Jansen style silver-leaf armchairs, France, mid-20th century, modeled after the celebrated late 18th-century “Montgolfier” chair attributed to Jean-Baptiste Demay and conceived in honor of the pioneering balloon ascents of the Montgolfier brothers. This iconic neoclassical form—among the most recognizable in French decorative arts—was closely associated with the court of Marie-Antoinette, with the balloon-form splat serving as both ornament and emblem of Enlightenment innovation.
Each armchair is finely carved in beech and finished in a soft silver-leaf surface, the oval back framing the distinctive pierced splat in the form of a Montgolfier hot-air balloon. A beaded band crosses the balloon and centers a carved medallion with intertwined “MA” initials, a reference to Marie-Antoinette and the royal commissions that popularized the model in the Louis XVI period. Balloon imagery entered the decorative vocabulary of the French court following the Montgolfiers’ historic ascent at Versailles in 1783, where flight became a potent symbol of modernity, science, and aristocratic spectacle.
The chairs are raised on fluted tapering legs with stop-fluted arm supports and scrolling hand terminals, retaining the disciplined geometry and restrained ornament of the Louis XVI canon. Their silver-leaf finish lends the pair a crisp architectural quality, while newly upholstered seats and arm pads in a Kravet silver-luster textile provide a subtle contemporary counterpoint to the neoclassical frame.
Elegant, historically referential, and highly versatile, this pair is equally suited to formal seating, bedroom placement, or use as accent chairs in a classical or contemporary interior.
