Antique Tailor’s Mannequin/Dress Form, Wolf Form Co., New York
Late 19th–Early 20th Century
This rare antique tailor’s mannequin is an early professional dress form produced by the Wolf Form Company of New York City, one of the most respected suppliers to the American garment and tailoring trade from the late 19th century onward. Stamped at the neck “Wolf Form Co., N.Y.C.” and marked Model 1985, Size 40, this example represents a working tool from the era of bespoke menswear rather than a decorative retail mannequin.
The form is constructed with a fully canvas-covered torso and legs, designed to accept pins and repeated handling in a tailoring or atelier environment. The stitched panel construction follows garment-making lines rather than anatomical idealization, and the presence of full legs—rather than a pedestal stand—indicates its use for cutting and fitting trousers, suits, and long coats directly on the figure. The mannequin retains its original metal neck cap and finial and is raised on a heavy circular steel base, providing excellent stability.
Notably, the silhouette reflects a mature early businessman’s figure, with a natural waist, relaxed posture, and fuller abdomen—an honest, unidealized male form typical of late Victorian and Edwardian professional clientele. Unlike later 20th-century mannequins that promote athletic or stylized proportions, this form embodies what might today be affectionately described as an early “dad bod” silhouette: realistic, authoritative, and grounded in the realities of everyday menswear for working gentlemen.
Surface wear, water marks, and tonal variation to the canvas are consistent with age and studio use and contribute to the piece’s authenticity and sculptural character. These traces of use are valued by collectors and designers as evidence of the mannequin’s original function.
Today, early Wolf forms of this type are highly sought after for interior display, fashion studios, boutiques, photography settings, and industrial or loft environments, offering a compelling blend of fashion history, utilitarian design, and sculptural presence.
