the two armchairs of model 6534 are among the highest-quality designs by austrian architect and designer marcel kammerer for the thonet brothers company (both pieces bear a brand stamp). Kammerer, one of otto wagner’s most talented students at the academy of fine arts in vienna between 1898 and 1901, belonged to the inner circle of collaborators of the prominent architect of viennese modernism. Among other things, he was involved in the famous vienna post office savings bank project and, as a close associate of wagner, had a lasting influence on the development of modern viennese design.

from about 1905 to 1911, kammerer headed thonet’s design office and was responsible during this period for some of the most important models produced by the international bentwood furniture manufacturer. His works combine the structural clarity of viennese modernism with the technical sophistication of bentwood production.

model 6534 can be seen as a deliberate homage to josef hoffmann’s so-called buenos aires set, designed for jacob & josef kohn in 1905. Like hoffmann, kammerer combines strictly geometric forms with minimalist, architectural lines. Characteristic features include the strikingly curved armrests, the clearly defined proportions, and the elegant combination of decorative restraint and functional design.

these particular pieces have been preserved in remarkably good original condition. Both the bentwood and the original leather upholstery display an authentic patina that has developed over decades, impressively underscoring the armchairs’ historical character. Signs of wear and aging lend the furniture a special atmospheric quality while also attesting to the high level of craftsmanship and material durability characteristic of thonet’s production during that period.

the armchairs vividly illustrate the close connection between the viennese avant-garde and industrial furniture production at the beginning of the 20th century and are among the most significant examples of viennese art nouveau and early modernism in the field of austrian bentwood furniture.
