Comes as part of a collector's estate in … Read more Old, vintage ceremonial leather tiger / jaguar mask from Zitlala, Guerrero, Mexico. Comes as part of a collector's estate in Minneapolis, believed to be picked up on a trip to Mexico in the 1990's.

Masks like these were used in a traditional, ceremonial fertility dances — they were also used in ceremonies that represents a feline-canine battle …the leather “cascos” actually served as helmets as the dancers actually beat each other over the heads with sticks in an alcohol fueled and rather violent confrontation.

Hardened leather; hand-painted and constructed. Intact mirrors in the eyes of the mask.

Approx 15-inches tall by 16-inches wide and about 9-inches width from front to back.

Overall, in excellent condition with minimal wear consistent with age and use. Very striking head piece.
