Each piece features a different romantic English castle scene at center, framed by an exuberant border of roses, scrollwork and beaded edging, all in that warm cranberry-red on white that looks equally at home on a farmhouse table or a formal sideboard.
The backstamp reads Johnson Bros, England 1883, Old Britain Castles — and notes dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe, making this a set you can actually use and enjoy every day, not just admire.
Found at a recent old beach house sale on Olde Cape Cod, clearly well-loved and just as clearly well-cared-for. Seven of the eight pieces are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing. One dinner plate has a small old chip under the rim as shown in the photos — visible on close inspection but undetectable when the plate is in use at the table. The color is vivid and strong throughout.
A wonderful set for a cottage breakfast table, a holiday tablescape, or mixed in with other red transferware. These sets are increasingly hard to find complete.
