An exceptional 19th-century Chinese ceremonial winged bowl of multi-stave elmwood (Yumu) construction. Originating from northern China during the late Qing Dynasty, this distinctive vessel features high, dramatically flared "wings" that trace elegant architectural lines.
The exterior and rim are embellished with traditional symbols of perseverance and transformation, hand-painted in black and gray ink. The wings showcase delicate regional designs of birds, flowers, and leaves. The narrow side profiles and the base of the bowl feature finely detailed dragon-fish cartouche. The artist integrated a stylized workshop or maker's mark near the tail fin of the koi fish on one side.
Serving as an incredible centerpiece or collector's piece, this ceremonial bowl perfectly bridges regional folk art with traditional functional design. It retains an extraordinary, deep-toned natural red and amber patina developed across generations of care, showcasing the beautiful wood grain throughout. Dual braided metal tension wires provided the necessary structural reinforcement to hold the fitted staves securely together, adding an authentic antique element to its presentation. The entire surface has been conservation-sealed with professional microcrystalline wax to protect the historic patina.

This piece features an honest, un-restored presentation that preserves its authentic historical character and has been sealed with microcrystalline wax. Rim Character: Notable historical chips and indentations are present in a couple of places along the rim edge, showing aged, oxidized wood inside the losses from historic use. Wood & Structural Movement: Features traditional dual braided metal tension wires wrapped around the midsection and lower base. Due to the natural, expected shrinkage of the ancient elmwood over time, the wire sits slightly loose/away from the wood at one edge, though it remains structurally intact and entirely unfrayed with an authentic aged Chemical Patina & Surface: Authentic blue-green verdigris staining is present on the wood grain along the base and interior bottom edges, caused by historic moisture exposure and the natural oxidation of the copper-alloy tension wires. The surface exhibits light scratches, character marks, and expected signs of handling that enhance its deep, rich amber patina. Authentication & Base: The underside features an authentic, hand-painted dragon-fish cartouche with a visible maker/workshop signature mark. The foot ring shows expected wear and a single, isolated historical insect boring hole (completely inactive) typical for 120+ year old regional northern Chinese wood objects. less
