Decorative Japanese Six-Panel Double-Sided Lacquer Folding Screen with Nine Hand-Painted Flying Cranes & Chinoiserie Garden Scene
Japanese Six-Panel Room Divider / Lacquer Screen. Elegantly decorated with hand-painted motifs on both sides—a true collector’s dream piece.
This versatile and functional decorative screen is a stunning example of Early-20th-century Asian export lacquer work, blending traditional Japanese and Chinoiserie influences. Perfect as a room divider, dramatic wall accent, or standalone work of art, it instantly elevates any classic, Asian-inspired, or eclectic interior.
Front side: A dynamic Japanese scene featuring nine majestic red-crowned cranes (tsuru) in graceful flight and poised poses. Rendered in exquisite detail against a rich golden-ochre lacquer ground, they soar above stylized black swirling waves and lush green grasslands.
In Asian folklore, the crane is a sacred bird believed to live for 1,000 years and is strongly associated with wisdom, peace, and longevity. The number nine is especially auspicious in East Asian numerology—it symbolizes eternity, completeness, and heavenly blessings. Depictions of nine cranes were historically prized in the royal courts of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea and the Edo Period in Japan, and master artists frequently painted them as powerful symbols of good fortune. Traditionally, these screens were gifted to elders for milestone birthdays or to newlyweds to bless them with a long, harmonious life. This nine-crane motif serves as a beautiful decorative prayer for continued peace, prosperity, and enduring happiness in the home.
Reverse side: A monumental Chinoiserie Coromandel-style panel with a deep black lacquer background. Intricately hand-painted with classical motifs including rocks, flowering plants, vines, birds, and foliage in soft greens, corals, and golds—creating a serene, ornate garden landscape typical of fine export lacquer screens.
Measuring a generous 72" H × 98" W × 1" D when fully extended (approximately 16.3" per panel), this six-panel screen is substantial yet easy to position. The lacquer finish is smooth and glossy with excellent preservation; minor vintage wear is consistent with age and only adds to its authentic charm. Brass hinges and stable base allow flexible folding and display configurations.
Whether used to create privacy, anchor a seating area, or simply showcase as fine art, this double-sided beauty offers two completely different looks in one impressive piece. A high-impact addition to any design-forward home.
