mart stam was a dutch architect, urban planner, and furniture designer.
in the early stages of his career, mart stam worked as an architect in the netherlands and germany in the 1920s on various projects that are now considered historical landmarks. These included the weissenhof estate in stuttgart (1927), which is now a unesco world heritage site. Here, the organizer, ludwig mies van der rohe, presented mart stam's design for the cantilever chair, the s33 and s34, to the public for the first time. The idea of the two-legged cantilever design ("why four legs when two are enough?") with a frame made from a single bent piece of tubular steel was completely revolutionary. This piece of furniture symbolizes the innovative spirit of the bauhaus—simplicity and functionality—like almost no other design.
furthermore, he taught urban planning as a guest lecturer at the bauhaus dessau and was co-editor of the avant-garde magazine abc. In 1939, stam and his wife emigrated to the soviet union. As members of the "brigade may," they designed the construction of various soviet model cities. After returning to the netherlands, he accepted a teaching position at the institute for art education in amsterdam, where he became director. In 1948, mart stam once again settled in a communist state. In east germany, he taught at the dresden academy of fine arts and in 1950 became director of the berlin-weißensee school of applied arts (khb).
in the wake of the "formal dispute" in east germany, which essentially meant abandoning artistic freedom, mart stam left the country disillusioned. Back in his native netherlands, he worked as a freelance architect. However, stam was unable to recapture the success of his earlier years.
``` in 1966, stam retired to switzerland. From then on, he had no contact with former colleagues or friends.
