This 18th century wood panel with deep carving of two confronting mythical creatures towards a decorative pillar was an inset of a door or window panel that belonged to a house in North China. From the looks of the carving, it appears to be older than 19th century. The wood carver started from a thick piece of wood at least 1 1/2 inches thick and started chiseling the designs. There is no room for error. The main objects are two mythical creatures with the heads of dragons, body with fur and hoof feet like Qilins, a mythological animal that bring good luck. One is chained to this center pillar. There are floral branches behind each animal. The background is a repeat of geometrical designs. The wood carver was able to instill movements into his design and it appears active and lively.
The panel has been cleaned and it remains in its aged patina.
