This sculptural chair exemplifies Starck’s playful yet engineered approach to design, combining cast aluminum cabriole-style legs below ash wood finished in a deep ebony tone. The seat is accented with a grid of nine pale orange / pink rubber studs arranged in three rows, while the back features corresponding recessed indentations that allow the studs to nest neatly when the chair folds down. The clever hinged construction, using black chromium-plated steel hardware, lets the chair transform into a compact low table or pedestal, making it as functional as it is sculptural. The dramatic contrast between the polished aluminum legs and the dark wood surfaces gives is a striking presence from every angle, as a chair or side table. In chair form, it reads as a postmodern statement seating; folded down, it functions as a sleek, minimalist table.
