A finely executed Japanese cloisonné enamel bowl dating to the late Meiji period, produced for export and bearing the underglaze mark Dai Nippon Yushutsu (“Great Japan Export”). The form is elegant and restrained, with gently flared sides rising from a neatly defined foot, creating a well-balanced and highly usable profile.
The exterior is decorated with a vibrant turquoise ground, densely worked with a repeating scale pattern, serving as a rich backdrop for a series of lobed reserves. Each panel contains carefully composed floral and naturalistic scenes, including blossoming branches, rockwork, and fruiting motifs such as grapes, all rendered in a lively yet controlled palette. The compositions are framed by fine wirework and bordered with geometric detailing, demonstrating a confident and consistent hand.
Particularly noteworthy is the contrast between the highly ornamented exterior and the refined interior. The inside of the bowl is left predominantly white, decorated with a delicately painted floral spray in soft enamels, a design decision that reflects a sophisticated understanding of balance and restraint. The rim is further enhanced with a repeating stylized border in green, iron red, and gilt tones, tying the interior and exterior together visually.
The technical execution reflects the mature stage of Meiji period cloisonné production, when workshops were producing for an international audience while maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship. The dense ground pattern, crisp wirework, and well-controlled enamel surfaces all point to a Nagoya or Yokohama export workshop rather than an individually signed studio master.
Condition is very good overall, with minor surface wear consistent with age. The enamels remain stable and vibrant, with no major losses observed.
An attractive and highly decorative example of late Meiji Japanese cloisonné, this piece embodies the fusion of traditional Japanese design with export-driven aesthetics, making it a strong addition to any collection of Japanese decorative arts or fine enamelwork.
