While the upright backs with center splats are very much reminiscent of England’s Queen Anne style, the Dutch originated their own interpretation in the 17th and 18th centuries. Fluid and bolder shaping and exuberant inlays all over distinguish the Dutch versions, as seen in this pair. Note the sweeping backs and sturdy S-shape cabriole legs, all supported on finely carved ball and claw feet (an idea that originated in China centuries before).
For the delicate inlay work, Dutch craftsmen made full use of the exotic woods from the nation’s widespread colonies in the earlier centuries. The maker of these 19th-century chairs paid full homage to that tradition when crafting this duo. Offered as a matching pair only.
