Traditionally used as a hand or bed warmer, the enclosed form with removable screw-top opening reflects the practical yet decorative character of late Qing and early Republic domestic objects.
The compressed circular form is fitted with a swing handle and decorated with gilt floral scrollwork, auspicious calligraphy, and literary inscriptions. Centered by the large 福 (“Fu”) character symbolizing blessing and prosperity, the piece retains a beautifully aged bronze surface with worn gilt decoration that gives it exceptional depth. Equally compelling as a sculptural decorative object or layered into a collected interior, it is a wonderfully atmospheric piece with strong presence and character.

’m always drawn to pieces like this that work decoratively, but also carry a sense of story and meaning. The gilt floral scrollwork, auspicious symbolism, and lines from the famous Tang dynasty poem Spring Dawn by Meng Haoran give the piece the literary character associated with Chinese scholar objects. The large “Fu” character on the opposite side balances the poetry with a wish for prosperity and happiness.
To me, it has the kind of presence that invites curiosity and conversation over time.
And for anyone wondering, the poem itself reflects on spring, birdsong after rain, and fallen flowers—themes that feel especially fitting for an object like this.
