This septarian nodule has been expertly polished into an ovoid "egg" form. The exterior displays a network of dark, vein-like partitions, contrasting beautifully with warm beige and ochre tones. Inside, shimmering calcite crystal formations create a tactile surface, adding depth and intrigue. Septarian nodules formed during the Cretaceous period (approximately 50-70 million years ago), when much of what is now Utah lay beneath an ancient inland sea. They began as "mud balls" rich in organic marine material. As these sediments dried and contracted, they cracked internally. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater filled these fissure with calcite and aragonite, creating the distinctive vein patterns seen today. Often nicknamed "dragon egg" due to its scaled surface patterning, septarian is prized for its organic sculptural form, earthy palette, and intricate, one-of-a-kind crystal structures.
