Mahogany Sheraton-style lift-top console / hallway table with barley twist legs
Top lifts and turns 90 degrees to expand
Dimensions: 36" × 36" opened; 36" × 18 with lift-top down. 30"H.
Has a storage area under half of table base, available when lift-top is lifted. Often used as a game table or small breakfast table. Circa 1820-1840.
Swivel top opens to double its surface area. Barley twist or intricately rope-carved legs was a popular detail in American Federal & Sheraton furniture. Most authentic period examples are crafted from solid mahogany or cherry. These table were highly favored in early 19th century for their space-saving capabilities in high-traffic areas like entryways, so they served as narrow consoles. Furniture with these legs are often attributed to prominent furniture-making center like Boston or New York.
