A commanding pair of 19th-century carriage lanterns, recently acquired from a New Orleans estate home. These lanterns represent the peak of Victorian-era street and carriage lighting, featuring substantial copper construction and intricate cast decorative bands. The design is heavily influenced by French Second Empire aesthetics, characterized by ornate fleur-de-lis-style filigree and crown-like finials.
These lanterns have been previously electrified for modern use. As part of the Revive collection, they are presented with an emphasis on their architectural history and regional estate provenance. Their dark, moody patina is authentic to their age and original outdoor placement in the humid Gulf Coast climate.
Design & Decorative Details
Material: Solid copper with cast metal decorative accents.
Form: Elongated "torchiere" style with convex glass panes and a decorative crown top.
Details: High-relief floral and scrollwork bands encircle the midsection and "neck" of the lanterns, providing a rich textural contrast to the smooth copper surfaces.
Condition Notes
Glass: Some of the glass panes have been professionally replaced with clear, contemporary glass to ensure clarity and safety.
Finial: One decorative bottom finial requires minor soldering to be fully secured; however, the piece is present and intact.
