Furniture … Read more Modernism swept through all aspects of society in the beginning of the Republic of China. CE 1912 to 1949. Furniture styles followed this movement as well. Gone were the ornate elements that dominated furniture from the last dynastic period - Qing Dynasty. Simple designs with clean lines were the prevalent style. This pair of cabinets that can be used as nightstands is a good example. The cabinets have clean lines straight lines without ornaments except for the metal drawer pulls. They are made in the traditional methods by joinery and without nails. The top is a mitered frame with a moving panel, the sides and backs are frames with recessed panels. The base is supported by simple aprons across the legs. The finish is a rich mahogany lacquer.

The pair is practical and unpretentious and can be used in a modern home in many ways. The simplicity of form can easily fit in any decorative styles. The three drawers add ample storage. See less
