Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) and produced by Tenreiro Arquitetura de Interiores S.A., this pair of armchairs dates to the 1950s, a formative period in Brazilian modernism when refined domestic commissions defined the movement’s highest expression. Originating from a private residence in Teresópolis—a city closely associated with modernist architecture—the chairs reflect Tenreiro’s disciplined approach to proportion, lightness, and structural logic.
The form is defined by a restrained, architectural silhouette. Gently flared arms and a subtly inclined back articulate comfort through geometry rather than excess. The composition is anchored by tapered, ebonized hardwood legs that introduce contrast and visual lift, reinforcing Tenreiro’s characteristic pursuit of lightness. The volumes remain compact yet generous, with balanced mass and clean transitions between planes.
Constructed in solid hardwood, the frames demonstrate material integrity and clarity of line. The legs have been professionally restored, reestablishing depth and surface continuity while preserving original geometry. The seats and backs have been newly reupholstered in a mottled off-white textile selected for its quiet texture and tonal restraint, allowing the architectural framework to remain primary. Each chair retains the original “Tenreiro Arquitetura de Interiores S.A.” manufacturing seal, confirming authorship and workshop production.
Function is absorbed seamlessly into form: the angled backrest and supportive seat create an ergonomic experience without disrupting the composition’s visual equilibrium. The pair is presented in excellent vintage condition, with restoration executed in keeping with period materials and proportions.
