Attributed to Joaquim Tenreiro, this “Concha” armchair dates to the 1950s and exemplifies the organic refinement that defined Tenreiro’s contribution to Brazilian Modernism. The name “Concha,” meaning “shell” in Portuguese, directly references the sculptural form of the backrest, which curves fluidly into the armrests, enveloping the sitter with both visual and physical comfort.
The hardwood structure is supported by four pointed legs, a recurring Tenreiro motif that conveys lightness while maintaining structural clarity. The chair has been upholstered in light green ultrasuede, chosen for its exceptionally soft, velvety texture and subtle matte finish. The fabric enhances the chair’s sculptural quality while offering a contemporary interpretation of mid-century comfort.
Tenreiro’s work was foundational in defining a distinctly Brazilian modern language—one rooted in craftsmanship, proportion, and restraint. This armchair captures that philosophy with elegance, standing as both a functional object and a sculptural statement.
