Carlo Hauner, Brazil, c. 1950s. This rocking chair reframes Hauner’s interest in lightweight structure and organic line as a domestic, kinetic object: a sinuous metal armature is resolved into a low-slung, continuous seat that rises into a long, embracing back—the whole poised on curved rockers that give the piece a quietly animated presence.
Formally the design is spare and sculptural. The tubular frame traces a single, flowing gesture from runner to arm and back, allowing the sitter to read the object as an articulated line rather than a series of discrete members. The seat and back follow the frame’s curvature, producing an enveloping, lounge-forward posture; the elevated arm runs and the elongated back reinforce the chair’s composed balance between support and repose.
Craftsmanship and materiality are central. The chair’s structural logic is expressed through a painted metal frame that has been refinished to a sober black, while the seating surface is executed in new wicker that restores the original woven vocabulary. Execution privileges honest construction—the metal is neatly formed and joined, the wicker tightly finished—so that material integrity, grain of line, and rhythm of weave remain the primary expressive devices.
Function is inseparable from form: the rocking motion, extended back, and shaped seat provide a considered, supportive sit described as deliberate repose rather than indulgent softness. Condition: professionally restored; the metal has been repainted and the wicker renewed. Restoration has been conservative and transparent, with structural soundness confirmed and any age-appropriate marks confined to undersides and discrete edges.
