The simplicity and beauty of this solid hickory wood transport sled, with wood and metal runners, is its moveable pull handle. This type of sled is similar on both ends, so it could be pulled by humans. The handle extended length-wise to pull the sled when in use and when not in use, the handle would fold flat against the sled’s seat and be propped up to take up less room for storage. It was handcrafted by a friend of mine’s grandfather, a dairy farmer in Baraboo, Wisconsin, sometime in the 1920s to pull milk cans from the barn to the milk house. The sled’s height is elevated to be above the surface of the ground, sliding on ski-like runners. Runner fronts are curved to allow for sliding over ground cover (snow, etc.) and getting over other objects. Handcrafted from solid hickory wood using mortise and tenon joinery construction; hand-screwed fastening hardware. Bottom of the runners have what is called a shoe which is made of either sheet iron or steel; wood has a wax finish. This beauty measures as follows:

Overall: Sled length with handle extended 81¾”; sled length alone 40¼”; handle length alone 41½”
Sled alone: 22½ x 9½” W/H
Sled platform seat alone: length 31¼”; width 11½”
Weight: approximately 40 lbs.

In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear that includes scuffs and scratches. Please keep in mind that wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age so there are some indiscernible and discernible hairline splits to the handle and rails that do not detract from its beauty and functionality (see all photos, please). As mentioned, this beauty was handcrafted by my friend’s grandfather who lived on a dairy farm in Baraboo, Wisconsin, home to the Circus World Museum and the former headquarters and summer home of the Ringling Brothers Circus? His purpose for creating this transport sled is written on the underside. Note, we have chosen to offer it as an In-Home Delivery piece to ensure it gets to its new owner in the same condition as when it leaves us.

Structurally sound enough to haul things, if you desire, or to be used as a one-of-a-kind showpiece to complement even the most any discerning cabin or lodge design aesthetic.
