A studio stoneware bowl by Gunnar Nylund, designed and produced at Rörstrand in Sweden during the mid-20th century. The piece features an oval form with a striking radial sunburst pattern emerging from the center, finished in a textured matte stoneware glaze in soft sage, lichen, and earth tones. The rim is highlighted with deeper smoky-grey accents that frame the composition beautifully.
Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997) was one of the defining figures of 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics. As Artistic Director at Rörstrand from 1931 to 1958, he developed the studio's renowned chamotte and stoneware lines, working with rough textures, organic forms, and complex matte glazes that became synonymous with Swedish modernist ceramic art. His pieces are held in museum collections internationally and remain highly sought after among collectors of Scandinavian studio pottery.
This bowl works beautifully as a centerpiece on a coffee table, console, or dining surface, and its sculptural quality makes it equally striking displayed on a bookshelf or in a vitrine. A statement piece for collectors of mid-century Scandinavian studio ceramics, or for any interior where a refined organic form and earthy palette are valued.
