Antique Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Oval Serving Platter, Meiji Period, Circa 1870s–1900s
A boldly decorated and visually commanding example of Japanese Meiji period blue and white porcelain, this generous oval serving platter displays the confident, expressive brushwork and dramatic floral composition that distinguishes the finest Japanese blue and white ceramic production of the late 19th century. At 13½ by 11 inches this is a substantial and impressively scaled piece with considerable display presence — equally compelling hung on a wall, displayed on a dresser, or used as a decorative serving piece.
The front decoration is a masterful composition of large full-blown peonies — the king of flowers in Japanese decorative tradition — rendered with bold, painterly confidence amid flowering branches, foliage, and stylized rock and water elements at the base. The brushwork is assured and freely executed, each stroke placed with the practiced hand of a skilled Japanese ceramic decorator thoroughly at home with both the subject matter and the medium. The rich cobalt blue decoration plays beautifully against the clean white porcelain body, creating a striking graphic contrast that commands immediate attention.
Particularly noteworthy is the decorated reverse — hand painted with chrysanthemum and botanical foliage sprays within double concentric blue rings — a mark of quality and care that distinguishes this platter from more modestly produced examples where the reverse is left entirely plain. The unglazed foot rim and double concentric ring border on the base are entirely consistent with quality Japanese Meiji period production.
A single small chip on the reverse is honestly noted and appropriately reflected in the asking price — the front display surface is clean and presents beautifully.
