Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Blue Decorated Bowl, Late Edo Period, Circa 1880–1900
A handsome and authentically Japanese example of late Edo period Arita porcelain, this substantial blue decorated bowl represents the centuries-old tradition of fine ceramic production from the Arita region of Kyushu — the birthplace of Japanese porcelain and home to some of the most celebrated kilns in the entire history of East Asian ceramics. Decorated in both under and overglaze blue with bold geometric and abstract motifs, the bowl displays the confident, rhythmic decorative sensibility that distinguishes the finest Arita work of the late 19th century.
The geometric and abstract decoration is executed with the practiced precision of a skilled Arita decorator working within a long and deeply established artistic tradition — each element of the pattern placed with deliberate care and a keen understanding of how decoration and form interact across the generous 11 inch diameter of the bowl. The combination of underglaze and overglaze blue decoration creates a subtle but pleasing depth and tonal variation that rewards close examination, the two blues playing against one another with sophisticated restraint.
At 11 inches across and 3 1/2 inches tall this is a substantial and impressive bowl with considerable display presence, equally compelling filled with fruit or objects as it is displayed alone on a shelf or table. The absence of a maker's mark is entirely consistent with Arita production of this period, when many fine pieces left the kilns unmarked.
Crazing is present and consistent with the age and firing of the piece, and minor glaze flakes on the rim are honestly noted. No cracks are present.
