The pottery was known for "high-class" decorative domestic items, including dinnerware and sanitary ware. Their designs often utilized transferware techniques, where patterns like this "Corona" platter were printed onto ceramic before glazing.
F. Winkle & Co. was a prominent English earthenware manufacturer that operated in the famous
"Potteries" region of Staffordshire from the late 19th century until the early 20th century.
Company Timeline
Establishment (1885–1889): The business began as a partnership between Frederick Winkle and William Wood, initially operating at the Pearl Pottery in Hanley. In 1888, they built the Colonial Pottery Works on Whieldon Road, strategically located near the canal and railway for easy transport.
F. Winkle & Co. (1890–1910): Following a disagreement in 1889, the partnership dissolved. Frederick Winkle continued alone at the Colonial Pottery under the name F. Winkle & Co..
Expansion & Trademarks: In 1891, the firm introduced the trade name "Fenton Faience" for marketing purposes. The famous "Whieldon Ware" brand—named after 18th-century master potter Thomas Whieldon—was later used for many of their domestic earthenware lines.
Later Years (1911–1931): The company became a limited entity (F. Winkle & Co. Ltd.) around 1911. During WWI, they held government contracts to produce canteen ware for the armed services.
