A commanding late 19th century cane armchair with an ebonized hardwood frame, caned back and side panels, scrolled open arms and turned front legs. The shaped scalloped crest rail and overall form are consistent with the refined craftsmanship of the Victorian era, a period when cane furniture reached the height of its popularity in Europe and beyond for its structural elegance and breathability. The cane panels throughout are intact and the frame is solid and sturdy.
The frame has been refinished at some point in its history, most likely during its active years as a working Hollywood production piece, with the ebonized finish deliberately maintained to serve the chair's on-screen life. The wear present throughout the frame has been intentionally preserved as an integral part of the chair's character, authenticity and provenance. This is not a chair that has been restored or cleaned up. It is presented exactly as it left the studio.
What makes this chair irreplaceable is its documented Hollywood provenance.
An NBCUniversal Television prop department inventory tag remains affixed to the underside, confirming this piece lived inside the legendary Universal Studios prop house and appeared in NBCUniversal television productions over the years. Furniture with verified Hollywood studio provenance carries a story that no newly sourced Victorian cane chair can offer. The wear on this frame is not damage. It is a record of its life on set.
The loose seat cushion is upholstered in sage green linen, accompanied by a decorative ikat-patterned bolster in rust, cream and green.
