Kokeshi dolls originated in northern Japan during the Edo period (CE 1603-1866) as simple wooden toys crafted by artisans in hot spring resort areas. These handmade dolls feature a cylindrical body and a large round head, traditionally hand-painted with floral motifs and simple facial features. They were originally sold as souvenirs to visitors of onsen towns in the Tohoku region. Onsen towns in Japan are centered around natural hot springs.
Kokeshi dolls appeal to collectors of Japanese folk art, vintage toys and traditional crafts for their charming simplicity and cultural significance. Each doll is unique, reflecting the individual artisan's style and regional variations. Collectors value these dolls for their nostalgic aesthetic, handcrafted quality, and representation of Japanese rural craftsmanship from the mid 20th century.
These three dolls are by signed by their makers, The three signatures are by three individuals though the styles are very similar. Notice the red leaf like brush strokes for hair on all three dolls.
My interest in these dolls began as a child when they were first introduced to me by my father who brought a few back from his business trips to Japan. The dolls were small, merely a few inches tall, unlike these three, the tallest being 12 inches I like the taller dolls because they have more presence!!
