These handmade dolls feature a cylindrical body and a large round head, traditionally hand-painted with floral motifs and simple facial features. They were originally sold as souvenirs to visitors of onsen towns in the Tohoku region. Onsen towns in Japan are centered around natural hot springs.

These three dolls are by signed by their makers, The three signatures are by three individuals though the styles are very similar. Notice the red leaf like brush strokes for hair on all three dolls.

My interest in these dolls began as a child when they were first introduced to me by my father who brought a few back from his business trips to Japan. The dolls were small, merely a few inches tall, unlike these three, the tallest being 12 inches I like the taller dolls because they have more presence!! See less
