Kokeshi dolls originated n the Tohoku region of northern Japan during the early 19th century, created by woodturners (kijishi) as souvenirs for visitors to hot spring resorts. The tallest doll appear to be a Naruko-style kokeshi, characterized by its distinctive head that can rotate and squeak. along with the painted floral motifs typical of this region. These dolls are traditionally made with mizuki (dogwood) or cherrywood, turned on a lathe and hand-painted with simple, charming facial features and have become beloved symbols of Japanese folk art and craftsmanship. The simplicity and warmth of kokeshi dolls have made them increasingly popular among international collectors who appreciate their minimalist aesthetic and cultural significance.
These three dolls are done by three individual artists in the 1950's. Dimensions belong to tallest doll.
