This is a heavy brass tea caddy, shaped like a n eight lobed melon and finished in a dark lacquer. A spray of flower is engraved on each lobe as decoration,. Although it is not easily discernible, the round cover is covered with auspicious characters - Fu on the top means good fortune, and the symbols for wan, ten thousand, mean plentiful. Objects like these were made for domestic use, and sold in tea shops as containers for expensive teas. However, there is a "Made in China" mark on the base, which suggests that it was meant for export, probably to the trade expositions and world's fairs in the early 20th century. See less
