If it looks like it takes you into its arms to cozy you, you would be right. Initially, you’re welcomed by the scrolled, out-swept arms. Then, the chair’s prominent "wings" at about head height promise to shield you from drafts and trap heat from an adjacent fireplace—especially important for chilly nights in England before central heating. And for sound absorption, the design might have offered a bit of peace and privacy from nearby gossips. (Think of “Pride and Prejudice’s” Mrs. Bennett.)
Especially when viewed from the side (or angled slightly away from the fireplace) this chair is characterized by graceful, flowing curves and a refined silhouette. The signature s-curved legs that arch outward at the "knee" and inward toward the foot are a defining element of Queen Anne furniture—in this case, done in ornate carved mahogany with acanthus leaves and “green man” faces on the front pair. The legs terminate in simple, rounded "pad" or "spoon" feet, which were common for this period before the more ornate ball-and-claw feet became popular later in the century.
