A quintessential piece of 1970s organic modernism, this 13-inch abstract fish was created by Austin Productions and likely designed by Karen Sever. This sculpture is cast in Durastone—Austin’s proprietary high-density stone composite—giving it a substantial weight and a deeply textured, rock-like surface. Signed and dated 'Austin Prod Inc 1977' on the reverse, the piece is mounted on its original dark-finish wooden plinth, making it an ideal textural accent for a Mid-Century or Brutalist-inspired interior.
It has not been possible to securely establish that this sculpture was designed by Sever. But it’s likely as she was the primary artist working for Austin in the late 70’s. The maker chop is readily identifiable. However, right after the copyright symbol there is additional markings which appears to be more signature like than the company chop. So far we haven’t been able to associate it with a particular artist.

There are small scrapes and scratches but they add to the patina, revealing the light gray color of the Durastone under the glazing(paint). These scratches add to the patina in that the original glazing did not completely cover all of the Durastone, rather small marks and spots were intentionally not glazed in order to reveal bits of the gray base of Durastone. They were part of the original design, intended to add to the composition and the texture which is so prominent in Brutalist sculpture. However, there is a historic break at the very bottom of the fish where a metal stem attaches it to the wooden base. This area has a visible, previous repair using unblended adhesive (documented in close-up photos). The sculpture remains firmly secured to the base, and the price has been adjusted to account for this vintage repair. less
