George Hepplewhite inspired solid rosewood dining room side chairs with shield-shaped backs and simple straight tapering legs.
Made by Charlotte Horstmann and Gerald Godfrey, Ltd in Hong Kong in 1984. Reference New York Times article about Mrs Horstmann on January 24, 1982. She was somewhat of a legend!
Living in Hong Kong in the early 1980's provided unique and exhilarating shopping experiences. It being an English colony at the time facilitated firing antique treasures and commissioning exquisitely made custom furniture. The choice wood was rosewood which is no longer available. Charlotte Horstmann's establishment was known for its skilled craftsmen who used the same tools and techniques of the period piece being recreated. It took one such craftsman an entire year to carve the backs of these 10 chairs plus the 2 matching arm chairs. Adding another craftsman to save time would have compromised her high standards and would not have been acceptable. He would have had a different touch, you see!
