A compelling pair of antique Chinese Southern Official’s Hat armchairs (Nanguanmaoyi), exemplifying the 'vernacular' or 'Country Ming' aesthetic. These are not the idealized palace pieces, but rather the honest, soulful furniture of the up-and-coming merchant and official classes, valued for their robust construction and textured, 'lived-in' presence.
Crafted with a mix of softwoods (for the frame) and textured split-bamboo panels on the seat and back slats, they offer a sculptural, architectural silhouette. These chairs bridge the gap between historic antiquity and the warmth of organic modernism, making them perfect textural anchors for a Contemporary or Mid-Century space.
These chairs are a masterclass in traditional Chinese joinery. True to the Ming aesthetic, the frames are constructed entirely without the use of nails or screws, relying instead on sophisticated round dowels and square pegging. The only exception to this ancient method is the use of original, tiny iron brads employed to discreetly secure the delicate split-bamboo slats to the seat and back frames.
As is characteristic of authentic vernacular pieces, these chairs possess a profound 'patina of time.' The original joinery remains strong but shows honest wear, including historic insect scarring on the underside (documented in photos, where the damaged portion was turned inward).

This includes historic insect scarring on the underside (documented in photos), which serves as a testament to their age and timber history. To ensure another generation of functional use, we have professionally stabilized the chairs. The rear leg supports—which may have been a previous owner's non-original attempt at stabilization—were replaced with custom, functional braces designed for maximum longevity. We prioritized structural reliability over a faux-antique reproduction. The fractured previous supports are included in the sale for historical documentation (see photos). These chairs are now remarkably stable and ready for daily use while retaining their ancient, soulful character. In addition, one chair has a small piece of framing for the back slats missing (see photo, lower left corner). It appears to have been chipped off somewhere in antiquity. less
